Ride-sharing giant Lyft is expanding its feature that pairs women and nonbinary riders with other women and nonbinary drivers to over 240 markets in the U.S. The feature, called Women+ Connect, was originally rolled out in September in Chicago, Phoenix, San Diego, San Francisco and San Jose, California. After its launch, Lyft says, its users strongly demanded it be available nationwide.

When the Women+ Connect feature is toggled on, the app will prioritize pairing drivers with riders who identify as either women or nonbinary, according to their Lyft profiles. The news release makes it clear the feature does not guarantee it will pair women and nonbinary riders with other women and nonbinary drivers, but it seeks to increase the likelihood.

The announcement Tuesday said that although the feature can be turned off, 67% of drivers have opted in to using it. Overall, 7 million Women+ Connect rides have been completed to date. The change was made after drivers alleged in several lawsuits that they felt unsafe while working.

"At Lyft, it's our goal to get them where they're going comfortably and confidently," the news release said. "Women+ Connect offers more control over the rideshare experience for women and nonbinary riders and drivers." Only 23% of Lyft drivers are women, and women make up roughly half of all riders. With the new safety feature, Lyft hopes to increase that number.

vosnmars 8 days ago I'm a female driver that drives primarily late night on weekends 6pm to 6am in Los Angeles, but I usually only do Black/Black SUV, but occasionally do comfort or XL under certain circumstances. If I happen to do a comfort or XL, I'll turn this feature on for a bit but I do this to make extra money so I won't be changing my criteria on accepting rides. Im not going to take a low rated pax, low paying ride, or drive far to get anybody, etc. If the ride is worth it for me, I'll

TotesAwkLol 8 days ago . Ever since I had a male driver tell me "I knew you'd be hot from your picture but wow, you look even better in person," I have wanted a female-only option.

rideshareAnon · 8 days ago . Idk a majority of my passengers are women on both Uber/Lyft ... probably not a lot of women drivers late at night. Never had an issue and I find that women are much better tippers. Hope this feature solves problems for some users though.

blue_d133 5 mo. ago I really do not understand the whole "drama". A woman has every right to request a woman driver. Where's the issue about it? Until man are getting verbally abuse on a daily basis due to thei gender, I do not believe they have a say in that decision.
